The old bookshop http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/UrbanSketchers/~3/7Qe8gkIIOwY/old-bookshop.html
Librería Cervantes is the oldest bookshop to be found in Málaga. It is a magic place, delightfuly old-fashioned in its style, with its row of globes in the upper shelf and its carefuly displayed collections of the most beautiful fountain pens or luxury editions of poetry. It has not changed for decades, and I have proustian memories of myself watching fascinated through that glasswindow while holding my grandfather's hand, more than thirty years ago.
But it is also one of the last family owned shops in the main commercial area of the city, and I fear it may disappear sometime -in a changing streetscape where the prize of the commercial square meter skyrockets- perhaps to be replaced by a plain store belonging to a big company or franchise businesses... |

Dragon*Con 2010 Cosplay..it continues
I think I have found the style of wig I will use for the Tom Servo costume for Dragon*Con 2010. A bouffant. I found a wig on Ebay that fits my vision. Unfortunately, it's in black and not white or platinum blonde. Also, it's out of my price range. I found a cheaper version. It's a little longer than I like, but will do as a back up. It's a little bit too long. I like the volume, but I want it to be at chin length, maximum. Depending on the quality of the hair, I could give it a trim and restyle if needed. So I am on the look out for a bubble bouffant wig in platinum or white that will fit my giant Irish cranium. Tallahassee has a ridiculously large amount of wig shops, which is good. I'll be hitting those over the next eight months as I slowly piece together the Sexy Tom Servo costume. Current Mood: busy |

Trouble in dreams*
Last night, I had two different dreams. Both of them involved cats (my Seamus and my sister's much missed Duchess) being hit by cars. What I remember most from these dreams is the strong emotional reaction and the feeling of helplessness. What I wonder is this: Are the emotions a reaction to the dream, or are the dreams an attempt to "visualize" the emotions? Knowing the folks who read this, I suspect that you've examined this question before. What are your thoughts? *shameless plug Current Mood: weird |

Little Lessons from the Masters IX (I think) "An artist should ruthlessly destroy his manuscripts after publication, lest they mislead academic mediocrities into thinking that it is possible to unravel the mysteries of genius by studying cancelled readings. In art, purpose and plan are nothing; only the results count." -- Vladimir Nabokov Quoted by Alexander Hemon in his review of the new Nabokov fragment appearing now with publishers' brass band fronting. www.slate.com/id/2235023/
Of course Nabokov wasn't in the business of selling his drafts to collectors -- a nice source of income for those who need it. |

Piano hosts... http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/UrbanSketchers/~3/Oxv2gwXXLL0/piano-hosts.html Yesterday we went to a concert of one of the greatest Israel singer Ahinoam Nini (not only for my opinion). The concert was a part of “Piano Hosts” festival, where various artists performed with piano accompanying. I enjoyed it so much! When we left the concert hall, we immediately found ourselves in another performance outside. It was a wonderful atmosphere; I started to sketch directly on the festival booklet. This evening ended with a nice seating in a coffee shop, of course! |

Trees - Light Programming http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/UrbanSketchers/~3/aGWgUzArjoM/trees-light-programming.html Jeff Atkisson sits for hours in a small room behind the main stage programming the lighting that will appear on the trees. He has 12 songs that he needs to program on a miniature model of the trees, and he started off with "Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." He used an audio editing program called DP6 and instead of editing the audio he uses the programs MIDI files to turn the lights on the trees on and off. When he stacks the bars in the program to look like a staircase in the timeline for instance the lights will sweep on diagonally up the tree. First he places what he calls a blind cue on the timeline which sets the color which will happen with the next fade in or sweep. Other effects he mentioned include pops and gleams. When the light programing is finished he can directly transfer everything right over to the full scale trees. Huge black boxes called dimmer racks stand next to the tree model with hundreds of wires hanging out of them. Apparently one of these boxes had burnt out earlier that day but that problem was resolved by the time I came in to sketch. At one point the tree just would not light and Jeff was climbing all around in the snake pit of wiring. I don't know how he did it but after plugging in and unplugging a number of connections, everything started working again. He took a quick break from the program sent a text message to the director to double check some notes that might be needed. He suspected the director might want less lighting action on the trees and he programmed the lights accordingly. The director called back and they they discussed the trees lighting briefly. After that conversation Jeff proceeded with quick certainty. He started telling me about the directors style which consists of pictures within pictures with very specific shifts of focus. When I thought back to the War of the Worlds, that directing style became very apparent. I also found out the Trees show has a theme which is "Reflections from the attic". I learn something new about this show every day I come in to do another sketch. |

The Mary Whalen http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/UrbanSketchers/~3/uFMhgd12zBk/mary-whalen.html Oh the joys of being an Urban Sketcher. I've been doing a lot of drawings in Red Hook lately and consequently was E-mailed by Carolina Salguero who came across my Red hook sketches and invited me to come sketch her ship the MARY WHALEN. She is a retired oil tanker that is currently docked at the Red Hook container port, the north side of pier 9B. It was such a privilege to get to sketch this old beauty and I've already invited myself back for another session next week. Yes, the joys of being an Urban Sketcher. |

houses with stairs http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/UrbanSketchers/~3/rzNIs6Oj6c0/houses-with-stairs.html Since last summer USK Seoul members have tried to sketch once a month. Last month we took the crawl at Oksu-dong which would be redeveloped next year. The village located on the hill. So there were lots of stairs to connect the houses. I captured the scene viewed on top step. It was sunny and cloudy in turn. The shadow on stairs was vivid in sun light. The bottom was drawn under the steps in another place. |

Coastal Maine food?
What sort of food might a roach coach/food stall in coastal Maine sell? Here in Arizona, they often sell Mexican food. Do they sell fish on the coast? During a scene where my character is walking along the beach or a wharf (haven't decided yet,) she comes across one and orders a quick meal; preferably something regional. I need to know what that might be. Any thoughts? |

Saint Peter's Basilica
So say you went to the Basilica at the Vatican on an ordinary weekday; there's no event, nothing special is happening, it's just some Tuesday or something. What level of clergyman would be attending the church, being there for pilgrims to go talk to, kinda being the priest-on-duty? |

End of semester in first year of med school Searched: Wikipedia pages on medical schools (US), "semester schedule medical school", "first year medical school", essay Clinical Experiences in Pre-Clinical Years, SWU's med school curriculum site (actual class material password-protected) Setting: United States, present-day (well, 2008.) One of my characters is in his first year of medical school. The story takes place in late spring, as the semester is drawing to a close. Due to some tl;dr circumstances, he has to leave town for a few days. After checking the time one morning, he remarks on what he'd be doing in class at that particular moment, were he still at school. I've found summaries of first-year classes, and basic course schedules, but no real info on what particular tasks med students face during this time. (e.g., are the classes primarily lectures or do they involve dissection, are there small group projects or is it all individual work, etc.) If it makes a difference, my character plans to go into cardiothoracic surgery. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

English to Japanese (romaji) translation needed: "Red Moon"
Babelfish just gave me the kanji (which is interesting, but not quite what I was looking for) and I'm only coming up with online dictionaries when I try to work my Google-fu. I'm mapping out a cracked Twilight/Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) fic and I decided, in a moment of evil whimsy to entitle it "Red Moon" (per the way the moon seems to turn red whenever Muraki is out and about and doing his thing; yes, the fic features Edwierd -- er, Edward crossing paths with the not-so-good doctor), but part of me decided to have the title in Japanese as well as English. Can anyone help me out here? |
